The terms Albania and Albanian are not to be confused with the area in the Caucasus referred to in ancient texts as Albania or the language spoken there referred to as Albanian (an ancestor of the modern Udi language spoken in Azerbaijan and a member of a language family with no confirmed connections to the Indo-European language family).
History. The official language, written in a standard roman-style orthography adopted in , was based on the south Gheg dialect of Elbasan from the beginning of the Albanian state until World War II and since has been modelled on Tosk. Albanian speakers in Kosovo and in North Macedonia speak eastern varieties of Gheg but since have widely adopted a common orthography with Albania. An excellent historical grammar is Demiraj ; its treatment of the developments from PIE to Albanian is a bit spartan, hut the other historical discussions are thorough and illuminating. Also very good is Sanz Ledesma , a small but very informative Spanish overview of Albanian historical grammar.
